What to Expect During a Steel Building Delivery and Setup
Investing in a steel building is a big decision, and once the design and order are finalized, the next major milestone is delivery and installation. But what exactly happens between the time your structure leaves the factory and the moment it’s standing tall on your property?
Knowing what to expect can help you feel confident and prepared when delivery day comes—and help everything run smoothly from start to finish.
Don’t Let the Unknown Slow You Down
The delivery and setup process is often the part customers worry about the most. Will there be delays? What happens if the site isn’t ready? Who unloads the materials? What’s the timeline?
We get it—this phase can feel overwhelming. But with the right preparation and a clear plan, it’s a straightforward, well-organized process. And at Union Steel Structures, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
Step-by-Step: Your Steel Building Delivery and Installation Timeline
1. Final Coordination and Timeline
Once your building has been manufactured and is ready to ship, we’ll confirm your site’s readiness, coordinate logistics, and give you a projected delivery date. In most cases, you’ll get at least a few days’ notice so you can make any last-minute preparations.
2. Delivery Day
Your steel building components will arrive on a flatbed trailer. It’s important that your site is accessible to large vehicles and that the drop-off location is clearly marked and safe to unload.
3. Unloading the Materials
Unless arranged otherwise, it’s your responsibility to provide the equipment and personnel needed to unload materials—typically a forklift or skid steer. Unloading must be done safely and efficiently to keep everything in good condition and ready for assembly.
4. On-Site Inventory and Prep
Once the materials are on the ground, we’ll do an inventory check to ensure every component is accounted for. Our crew will then prepare the workspace, set up tools, and organize everything for the install.
5. Building Assembly
Installation begins with the framing, followed by roofing and siding panels, doors, and any other accessories. Depending on the size and complexity of your building, setup may take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks.
6. Final Inspection and Walkthrough
Once the structure is complete, we’ll conduct a final walkthrough with you. This gives us a chance to confirm everything meets expectations and answer any last-minute questions.
